The new EU
Drinking Water Directive

In order to ensure high hygiene standards within the EU, the new directive stipulates that all materials that come into contact with drinking water must either be included on a so-called positive list or be subject to strict controls and authorization procedures. In addition to metallic materials, this applies especially to organic materials such as plastics and grease as well as inorganic materials such as ceramics.

From 1 January, 2027 on, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) will take over the evaluation and authorization of corresponding materials at EU level. Transitional periods apply to materials already authorized at national level. From 12 January, 2028, it is legally binding that only those products will be installed by end users which either consist of materials that appear on the corresponding positive list or whose use has been approved accordingly.

The implementation of the EU Drinking Water Directive is a decisive step towards ensuring a high level of safety and quality for our drinking water in future. Companies and manufacturers that develop or sell products for the drinking water sector are called upon to adapt their processes and materials accordingly in order to comply with these new standards.

FLÜHS ensures the quality
of our drinking water

The quality of the drinking water that flows from taps in Germany is excellent. Not only the quality of the water, but also the material of pipes, fittings and associated components play a major role such as our valves that come into contact with water.

The requirements for materials that come into contact with drinking water have been tightened worldwide in recent years. In addition to progressively stricter guidelines for non-metallic substances, the focus for brass is primarily on the lead content of the respective alloy.

In January 2021, the European Union decided to set all requirements for materials that come into contact with drinking water in a new Drinking Water Directive. Article 11 of the European Union's new Drinking Water Directive stipulates that from 12 Jan, 2028 on, only products may be installed in end users' homes which ensure a maximum lead content of 5µg/l in drinking water is not exceeded. This is half of the current value. Materials with a lead content of more than 0.2% will therefore no longer be permitted.

At the beginning of 2025, Flühs will gradually switch over all products intended for installation or end use in Europe and products which are used in the drinking water sector from brass alloys that previously contained lead to the low-lead alloy CW510L or the lead-free alloy CW724R.

Electronic expertise –
a new long-term approach

TheBox is our answer to numerous unreliable electronic solutions on the market. It has been developed from scratch and is primarily designed to work long-term. TheBox has an open software interface that enables our customers to design a customized user interface. The combination of electronic control paired with the reliable Flühs valve technology ensures a long-term stable performance.

TheBox is available in three versions: A three-outlet version, a two-outlet version and a single-outlet version. What the three versions have in common is that all components can be easily and simply replaced or cleaned on the customer's premises if necessary.

The centerpiece of the two larger versions with two or three outlets is our Flühs Thermostar. In conjunction with intelligent software, this provides an extremely precise and, above all, constant temperature. The usual overshoots and undershoots in the event of pressure fluctuations in the pipes are largely avoided. TheBox offers double protection in the event of a cold-water failure - mechanically through the thermostatic valve and electronically monitored by a lock-out of the additionally installed Lifetime ceramic valve.

Our newly developed Progressive Prompt Reply is used in the smaller version with one outlet. In contrast to the usual large cold-water range, this achieves a much earlier mixing range for the hot water.
